White Card Course in Sydney: Get Site-Ready in One Day

Thinking about working in construction? Before you can step onto a building site in New South Wales, you need a White Card. At Waratah Polytechnic, you can get the training done in a single day.

Course: CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
Duration: 1 day (7.5 hours)
Delivery: Face-to-face at our Burwood Campus
Provider: Waratah Polytechnic, RTO 45881
Fee: $99 $130

What Is a White Card, and Do You Really Need One?

A White Card is the proof that you have completed general construction induction training. In NSW, anyone who does construction work, or who needs to be in an active construction zone, must hold one before they start.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a first-day labourer, an apprentice carpenter, a tiler, an electrician, a site supervisor or a delivery driver heading onto a worksite. If you’re going to be on site, you need the card. Most employers and head contractors will turn you away at the gate without it, and the penalties for working without one fall on both the worker and the business.
Think of it as your safety passport. It tells everyone on site that you understand the basics of staying safe and keeping others safe.

What You'll Learn on the Day

We keep the day practical. You won’t be sitting through a lecture from slides alone. Your trainer will walk you through real situations, show you how things go wrong on site, and explain how to stop them going wrong. The session covers:

  • Your rights and responsibilities. What the law expects from you, from your employer and from everyone else on the job.
  • Spotting hazards before they become accidents. Falls, moving machinery, electrical risks, hazardous materials, noise, dust and more.
  • How to assess and control risk. A simple way of thinking about danger that you can use on any site, in any trade.
  • Safe work habits. Correct use of PPE, safe manual handling, working around plant and vehicles, working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Emergency know-how. What to do when something goes wrong, including first response, evacuation and who to tell.
  • Communication on site. Reading safety signs, understanding site rules, and speaking up when something doesn’t look right.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course suits just about anyone heading into the building and construction world:

  • School leavers and career changers looking for a first step into the trades
  • Apprentices and trainees starting out in carpentry, joinery, tiling, plumbing, bricklaying and other trades
  • Labourers and general site workers
  • Supervisors, site managers and project staff who need to be on site
  • Tradespeople whose previous card has lapsed
  • Overseas students and newcomers to Australia who want to work in construction

If English isn’t your first language, don’t let that put you off. Let us know when you book and we’ll talk through what support is available.

How the Training Works

1. Book your seat. Choose a date that suits you and complete your enrolment.
2. Get your paperwork ready. You’ll need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) and valid photo ID. No USI yet? It’s free and takes a few minutes to create on the government website. We can point you in the right direction.
3. Attend your session. Arrive on time, bring your ID, and come ready to take part. Your trainer will guide you through each topic and answer questions as they come up.
4. Complete a short assessment. At the end of the day you’ll show what you’ve learned through a combination of questions and practical activities.
5. Collect your proof of training. Once you’re deemed competent, we’ll process your documents so you can apply for your White Card.
